ISOLATION OF CORDIFEN HAVING FOOD INHIBITING PROPERTY FROM ERLANGIA CORDIFOLIA

New substance cordifen from Erlangia cordifolia has structural formula (I) Cordifen is isolated by extraction of macerated leaves of Erlangia cordifolia, a plant growing in the Gikuyland region of Kenya. Cordifen has a repellent or 'anti-feedant' activity against insect larvae, and can thus be used for protecting crops. The antifeeds effect of cordifen is achieved without filling the insect larvae (they seek alternative foods when crops are sprayed with cordifen), so that the ecological balance is not disturbed. Effective results are obtd. when cordifen is incorporated into a carrier in a concn. of 70-100 ppm.
