[Also in Division F3] An explosively-actuated tool adapted to drive an operating element, such as a fastener element, comprises a striker 28 adapted to impact a charge of a solid relatively-stable low explosive composition 33 and movable in a chamber 23, a port 26 being provided for conducting explosive gases, evolved from explosive deflagration of the charge, to act on the operating element. The chamber 23 is formed in a block 10 secured to a barrel 11 and communicates with the bore 9 of the barrel via the port 26. A firing sleeve 15 is slidable on the barrel and may be retained in its loaded position against the action of a spring 16, by means of a rear lever 17 as shown in Fig. 1. In operation, a charge of explosive composition such as gun powder bonded together to form a pellet 33, is inserted, via a channel 27, into the chamber 23 after the striker is withdrawn against the action of a spring 31. Upon depressing a trigger 22, the sleeve is released and strikes the striker to fire the charge. The expanding gases move the striker and flow, via the port 26, into the barrel to act on the operating element and so drive the fastener into a workpiece. In a modification, a projection is formed on the inner end of the striker and co-operates with a corresponding recess in a plug 25. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the explosive pellet 33 is inserted into a chamber 58 on top of a spring- loaded anvil 59. To fire the tool a striker 65 is moved by a handle 68 and locked in a cocked position by a trigger 73. Upon releasing the trigger, the striker fires the charge and the gases pass via a port 61 and act on a driving piston 53, 54. A rotary magazine 80 for the explosive pellets is mounted in the tool, the pellets being pushed from apertures 81 therein by a spring-loaded ejector.
