Plant growth regulating and weed killing compsns. contain anthranilic acid derivs. of formula (I) or their salts; (where R1 is H, 1-6C alkyl, lower alkanoyl opt. substd. by a COOH gp. or 1 or 2 halogen atoms, or benzoyl opt. mono- or disubstd. by halogen, NO2, NH2, 1-3C alkyl or 1-3C alkoxy; R2 is 1-3C alkyl or alkoxy; R3 is H or 1-6C alkyl; with the proviso that R2 is not Me when R1 = R3 = H). Also claimed are new cpds. (I) where R1-R3 are as above, with the proviso that (a) R2 must be 3C alkyl or 2-3C alkoxy when R1 = R3 = H, and (b) R2 cannot be MeO when R1 = acetyl and R3 = H. The compsns. can be used to retard the growth of various plants (e.g. barley, lawn grass and grape vines) and to destroy certain weeds (e.g. Digitaria, Panicum, Sorghum, Imperata and Paspalum spp.). A typical cpd. is 6-methylamino-o-toluic acid. In an example, this is prepd. from 6-methylanthranilic acid and Me2SO4.
