A narrow channel is formed between the filling mandrel and the packaging tube passing thereover so that a stream of air is sucked downwardly between the tube and the mandrel when the apparatus is in use to maintain the inner surface of the tube non-contaminated for transverse sealing. The channel is formed by a bar (546) disposed in spaced peripherally continuous relationship about the lower end of the mandrel and connected thereto by spacer elements.
