Gas filled excess voltage arrester - series of spark gaps filled with different gases and voltage dependent resistors

The overvoltage arrester consists of a series connection of a number of individual spark gaps and of voltage-dependent resistors. The spark gaps are partly designed for different ignition voltages and have individual control systems for compensating the different ignition voltages. The different characteristics of the individual spark gaps are obtained by filling the spark gaps with different gases. Various gas combinations are possible, such as sulphur hexafluoride and air, or sulphur hexafluoride and nitrogen. Preferably the individual spark gaps are grouped together in modular elements which are filled with different gases. The different gas fill for the individual spark gaps may be carried out in accordance with a given numerical ratio.
