Hydrostatic plain ring seal - has stabiliser ring which prevents distortion due to differing coefficients of expansion using stabiliser rings

The hydrostatic plain ring seal has one stationary ring and one rotating with the shaft, a radial sealing gap being formed between them. Each ring consists of a supporting ring and an insert ring secured to it and on which the sealing face is situated. the rings have different coefficients of expansion, means being provided to prevent sealing face distortion as a result. One or more stabiliser rings (3a) are provided for the support (1) and insert (2) rings, being situated on the side of the support ring furthest from the insert ring, or between them. The material of the stabiliser ring has a coefficient of expansion, and the position and cross-sectional area of the ring in relation to the other two are such, as to counteract forces and torques in the system without distortion of the seal taking place.
