1401621 Feeding sheet metal; shearing SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER AB 3 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 12744/71 Heading B3W A machine for cutting superposed layers of sheet material to successively form elements for heat exchangers and for collecting the elements thus formed into a stack comprises a shearing machine, a gripper reciprocable between a sheet pick-up and a sheet-release position for feeding superposed sheets to and beyond the shear blades, a stationary clamp between the blades and the sheet-release position and means for adjusting in a step-by-step manner the sheet pick-up position so as to change successively the width of the elements consecutively severed from the layers of sheet material. As shown, a gripper device 48, including a pressure plate reciprocated by rams 54, is reciprocable by means of a piston and cylinder unit 26, 44, 46 mounted in a frame 24. A similar stationary gripper device 60 carries stops 70 for limiting the feed stroke of the movable gripper device 48. For shearing superposed corrugated metal sheets 76 to form successive pairs of plates of increasing width, the frame 24 is movable along fixed rails 22 to progressively move away from the shear 12 the position of the gripper device 48 in which it grips the sheets 76. A rack 28 secured to the underside of the cylinder 26 meshes with a pinion 30 rigid with a shaft 32 journalled in the shear frame at 34. One end of the shaft 32 carries a ratchet wheel 36 which engages a pallet 38 which prevents movement of the frame 24 during the feed stroke of the gripper device 48. At the end of the feed stroke a servomotor 40 is activated to swing the pallet 38, moving the rachet wheel 36 clockwise one tooth and thus the frame 24 to the right. The gripper device 48 when it next grips the sheets is thus further from the sheat and feeds a greater length of sheet through the shear. The pairs of plates are collected into a stack to suit sector-shaped compartments of a heat exchanger. The shear is pneumatically actuated or driven by an eccentric.
