The system for preheating liquid fuels for combustion is applicable to a wide variety of fuels which cannot be satisfactorily atomised at ambient temp. The heater is a thick-walled cylindrical vessel (1) of conducting material, with a pipe coil (2) for the fuel in the wall. The vessel is partially filled with an electrolyte (4) whose b. pt. is somewhat above the preheat temp. required. An airtight cover with a pump connection (7), press. gauge tapping (8) and immersible electrode (5) in an insulating cuff (6) is then fitted and the internal press. reduced as appropriate to the fuel. Current through the electrolyte then produces a mixture of liquid and vapour at boiling point; the lower specific heat of the vapour reduces thermal shock for the fuel entering at the top.
