The multi-compartment bulk carrier vessel can be converted into a vessel with fewer compartments to suit more rapid charging and unloading systems. This is assisted by adding esp. fabricated reinforcing sheets (12) along the sides, resting on existing cross members (2) at the bottom of the hold, and against existing vertical members (3) at the sides of the hull (5). This sheet arrangement (12) has a vertical sheet (13) of about half the height of the hold, with a flange (14) at the bottom to weld to the cross members (2). At the top, a sloping portion (15) extends to the verticals (3) and extensions (15d) fill the gaps between. Triangular gusset plates (16) support and reinforce the vertical (13) and sloping (15) parts. Vertical tubes (20) extend intermediately between the bottom cross members and the deck above, secured by vertical plates (19) to the hull.
