Appts. for spreading green malt over a kiln floor has a carriage with a hopper which travels on rails above floor. This hopper discharges onto a screw across the floor, which in turn deposits the malt along the floor. Behind the screw is supported a vertical levelling plate. The height of this plate, which is made in several sections, can be adjusted to suit the depth of malt distributed on the floor, as the carriage moves. The sections can be adjusted in height in steps, behind the discharge screw. The whole can be lowered towards the kiln floor.
