The combined brake and accelerator pedal has a mean setting secured by a spring loaded ratchet (14) at the extension of the pedal shaft, past the pivot point. If the pedal is depressed from the ratchet setting the brakes are progressively applied, with the throttle setting being at idling on the ratchet setting. If the pedal is allowed to rise from the ratchet setting then the throttle is progressively increased. To release the throttle setting from idling the pedal is briefly depressed and released in a controlled way. The one pedal design enables the driver to perform emergency braking with a minimum of time delay.
