The compression-ignition engine has one or more pistons working in their respective cylinders, each with a combustion chamber. This is formed by a main chamber between piston and cylinder head, connected by a passage to a spherical ante-chamber in the head containing the fuel injector. The ante-chamber is separated from the main one by an insert in the head, incorporating the passages which joins the antechamber tangentially. The inert (8) has a narrow protrusion (13) extending into the ante-chamber (6) lying in a vertical central plane passing through the passage (9) and opposite the nozzle (7) of the injector. The protrusion can have edges (14, 15) running at right angles to each other, one horizontal and the other vertical.
