A dental tool is for tensioning a tooth matrix, so that a loop of the material can be tensioned around the tooth to be treated to exclude the filling material from the tooth region to be protected. At the front of the tool is a holding portion with a fixed head (22) carrying a sloping surface. This includes rounded portions, with a set of slots (22a, b, c) at right angles to each other, over it. The tensioning portion has a clamping head (3) mounted on a guide rail (7) which is trapeze shaped in cross-section and on which it slides when moved by rotating the handle. The tool also has grooves (7a) to guide the clamping head.
