The device has program and reversing cam drums controlling the machine program and cycles, mounted behind one another on a shaft. The program selected from a number of programs is set by rotation of the shaft by a knob. The program and reversing drum are driven at different speeds by a motor through a stepping mechanism, whose driving element engages different sets of toothings. A locking cam on the shaft operates a safety door lock with an open and a locked positions. It is also driven by the motor. The rotation of the locking cam support is carried out exclusively by the motor, the driving element of the program and reversing drum and additional transmission elements, operative in accordance with the program drum position.
