Methane is prepd. by reacting CO with H2 in presence of a nickel contg. catalyst at 300-950 degrees C, the catalyst consisting of an acid function -free inert carrier based on a metallic oxide which has been calcined at a temp. above 1200 degrees C and on which are deposited 0.1-3% of an oxide of a gp 3,4 or 6 metal oxide stable at up to 950 degrees C and 5-25% relative to the prepd. catalyst of nickel oxide. The catalysts ensure the prodn. of methane at lower and higher temps. without the gas compsn. being dependent on the CO content. The reaction can proceed without the addn. of steam. The catalysts effect a far reaching stabilisation of the equilibrium and show a particularly long active period.
