Transparent, colourless polyamide from salt - of isophthalic acid and hexa:methylene di:amine, isolated from aq. aprotic organic solvent

Polyamides are prepd. from isophthalic acid and hexamethylene diamine by polycondensation of the corresp. salt which has been isolated from a mixt. of an aprotic organic solvent and water. The salt is obtd. in high yield and with good purity. The polyamides are colourless and transparent, are soluble in m-cresol even when the mol. wt. is very high, and have good mechanical properties. The polyamides can be injection moulded or extruded, e.g. to fibres, bristles, films and plates. Suitable solvents are formamide, DMF, N-methyl-pyrrolidone, DMSO and hexamethlphosphoric acid triamide. The ratio of solvent : water is 50:50-80:20 (60:40-:70:30).
