Continuous hydrogenation of S-contg. coal is carried out by reacting particulate coal with H2 to produce liq. hydrocarbons, H2S and an S-contg. residue. The residue is then burned to produce an SO2-contg. flue gas. The flue gas is scrubbed to remove the SO2, which is then reacted with a stoichiometric amt. of the H2S to form elemental S. Combustion of the S-contg. residue avoids problems of disposal and provides thermal energy, e.g. for steam generation. The S-contg. residue can comprise the uncreated coal solids and/or a residue formed by vacuum distn. of the hydrocarbon product. The flue gas from the combustion of the residue can be scrubbed with an aq. phosphate or citrate soln. The reaction between the SO2 and H2S can be effected in a conventional Claus unit.
