1371697 Sulphur: desulphurization of gases BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 16 Feb 1972 [20 Feb 1971] 7126/72 Heading C1A Sulphur is obtained by reacting H2S with SO2 and/or O2 in the presence of an inert polar aprotic solvent containing dissolved therein a phosphine oxide R3P = O where the R groups are the same or different and may be C1-3 alkyl or phenyl. Exemplified compounds are trimethyl, triethyl and triphenyl phosphine oxide. The solvent may be tetramethylene sulphone, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, ethylene glycol, glycerol, or benzonitrile. Water may also be present. The gases may be passed in countercurrent to the solution in a packed tower or bubble column, or a carrier may be impregnated with the solution and the gases passed over it. The temperature may be 15-130‹ C. and the product may be solid or liquid S according to temperature. The process may be used for the desulphurization of gases containing H2S and S02.
