The cpd. 5- 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-furanyl -dihydro-2(3H)-furanone (I) is new. (I) is an antiinflammatory agent. At 300 mg/kg p.o. in aq. methyl cellulose it inhibits carragheenin-induced oedema in the rate. In an example, (I) is prepd. by treating methyl 4- 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-furanyl -4-oxobutanoate with NaBH4.
