Cpds. of formula (I) and their acid addn. salts when Y is NR3R4, are new: (R = H, F, Cl or Br, R1 = 1-3C alkyl, Y = Br, I, isobutyl, t-butyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexenyl or a gp. or -NR3R4, R2=H, F, Cl, Br or 1-4C alkoxy, R3 and R4 are same or different 1-3C alkyl or are together (CH2)n (n = 4-5), -(CH2)2. O. (CH2)2- -CH2. CH=CH. CH2- or -CH2)2. NR5. (CH2)2- R5 = H or 1-3C alkyl, A = acetyl or -C(Z)=CH2, Z = Br or Cl). (I) are anti-inflammatories e.g. 2-(p-biphenylyl)-2-penten-4-one (Ia) has ED5o = 27 mg/kg (p. o) for inhibition of carragheenin-induced oedema in the rat paw. Daily dose is 70-1500 mg in usual oral, parenteral or rectal forms. 20 cpds. are specif claimed including 2-(p-morpholinophenyl)-2-pentene-4-one, 2-(p-morpholinophenyl)-4-chloro-2, 4-pentadiene and 2-(4-cyclohexyl-3-chlorophenyl)-2-pentene-4-one.
