The laser is designed for use as a weapon for defence against aircraft and rockets. As in 2624862, 2628260 and 2629598, the 'pumping', ie running of the beam to-and-fro between the optical mirrors (8, 9) is carried out only in the oscillator zone (11) with a mainly metal optical system in this zone. The pumped beam leaves through the hole in (9) into the amplifying zone (12), where it is further stimulated by the plasma. The laser beam of high intensity is then emitted to the target as a hollow or solid beam (P2).
