In operating a glass melting furnace with a melting section adjacent to a workinv vat the amount of glass flowing into the working vat is maintained at a higher level than the mat. extracted from the vat, e.g. 3 to 10-times greater. The excess is recirculated by a connecting duct into the melting section or into a separate clarifying chamber. Process removes any bubbles introduced by the extraction operation and prevents quality alterations by surface evapn. of boron, lead or fluoride contents. Glass of better and more uniform quality is obtd. independent of the loading and type of operation. The furnace is easy to build and to operate.
