A furnace is operated for melting glass, using a melting chamber (I) and =1 working chamber (II) located alongside (I). More glass is circulated in chamber than the amt. gathered; and the excess glass is returned to the channel between the chambers or to a separate refining zone. The amt. of glass circulated through (II) is pref. a multiple of the amt. gathered, esp. 3-10 times the amt. gathered from the surface of the glass in (II). Pref. a return channel is used for glass flowing from (II) back to the channel between the chambers and heating electrodes are used to raise the glass temp. before it re-enters (II). Stirrers and/or impellers are pref. fitted on both sides of (II) to assist circulation of the glass. Homogeneous glass, at the correct temp. and free from bubbles, is maintained in (II).
