Process for upset forging a bar of metal in which a section of the bar is heated to a temp at which it can be upset by being compressed axially. The bar is heated by passing it progressively between one or more indicators so that the farthermost sections of the bar become heated. The rate at which the bar is passed through the field and the field strength are chosen so that the section of the bar reaches the necessary temp and obtains the required size before leaving the field of induction. The process is partic useful when upset forging materials aluminium bronze brass copper etc. Bars can be increased to large widths since they have a hard core making them insensitive to lateral deviations.
