Substrates are coated with a polymeric protective layer by coating carrier belt with the polymeric layer, drying the layer by passing the belt through a drier, coating the layer with a thin adhesive layer and drying the latter by passing the belt through a further drier and finally adhering the polymeric layer to the substrate. Process is used for protecting printed faces of cardboard book covers or packaging matl. such as paper sheets for foodstuffs.
