The material e.g. manure, fertilizer, is store in a heap against a wall and unload from the top of the heap so that there is no danger of the heap collapsing while the material is being handled. The shape of the heap may include an inclined floor which adds to the volume stored for the same floorspace. The screw conveyor (13) comprises a rotary tube (14) with an external helical rib (15) passes material to a hoppe (33) which feeds a conveyor belt (12). The screw conveyor inclination may be varied by means of the hydraulic jack (20) so that the conveyor can handle the material as the height of the heap is reduced.
