Shaft coupling with torque limiter - has two discs on shaft flanges held by friction from ring clamp which controls slip load

A torque limiting coupling is formed from two similar discs (2) (5) which are attached by bolts (3) (6) to the flanges of the shafts (1 and 4). The discs (2) (5) have circumferential grooves which match ridges (10) (11) in the surrounding ring clamp (7). The ring clamp (7) is made of two half rings held together by clamping bolts. The degree of clamping controls the frictional force between the ring (7) and the discs (2) and (5) and therefore controls the torque at which the coupling will slip. In an alternative design the ring (7) is replaced by separate segments held in position by an outer clamping ring. the discs (2)(5) are made of steel whilst the ring (7) or the segments are made from castings.
