A friction brake ring (2), attached to a rotating shaft (21) is axially pressed against the friction elements (9) by the force of compression coil springs (15). The reaction of the coil springs is acting on a ring piston assembly (16) which locates the springs. In order to match the friction force of the brake to the speed of shaft (21), the ring piston (16) is pressurized from a variable compressed air supply. Hence the axial load on the brake pad (9) is also variable. To disengage the brake, the ring piston assembly (14) which is part of the brake ring (2) is pressurized.
