Composite fibre-reinforced, resin-clad slabs for flooring - giving high strength to weight ratios and durability

Composite flooring slabs are made by lining a lightweight, incompressible core made of e.g. reconstituted resin bonded wood or rigid foam with high tensile strength areas, of reinforced resin, and enclosing the covered core in a moulded casing of fibre-reinforced resin. Core may be of phenolic foam or of wood particles bound by a flame retardant (mineral filled) resin. The covered are of glass mat impregnated with polyester resin and opt. incorporating metallic straps or mesh in a laminated structure. The slab structure gives attractive combination of high stiffness, age-, rot and fire-resistance, low wt., good thermal and acoustic insulation and impermeability.
