Osteoporosis treatment and callus-forming compsn. - contains a fluoride and (L)-ascorbic acid, pref. as a delayed and prolonged release tablet

Compsn. for the treatment of osteoporosis, which also favours Callus formation in the case of fractures, contains (a) soluble fluorides (salts) and (b) L-ascorbic acid and/or its alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal salts. The molar ratio of constituents (a):(b) is pref. 1:0.5-5. The preferred fluorides are the sodium and/or potassium salts and the ascorbic acid is used as the free acid and/or the magnesium salt. The compsn. is administered orally in the form of a delayed and prolonged release compsn. constituent (a) having a more delayed and more prolonged release than (b). Pref. (a) is released over 4-6 hrs. and (b) over 2-3 hrs. Used for treatment of osteoporosis and fractured bones. Ascorbic acid has favourable activity in the formation of organic substances which are the basis of boned (collagen and mucopolysaccharides). High fluoride concns. improved mineralisation of the bone but have toxic side-effects. The present compsn. is synergistic allowing the fluorides to be used at lower concentrations and avoiding side-effects.
