Serotonin is sepd. from coffee wax by hydrolysing a of coffee wax in a benzyl alcohol using an aq. soln. of a strong base under an inert atmosphere, the serotinin-contg. reaction medium is then sepd. off. Serotinin (5-hydroxytryptamine) plays a role in cerebral metabolism and can be used as a medicament with vasoconstrictive, antipyretic, antiallergic, antipsychotic, anti-migrain and anti-tobacco activity. In an example, decaffeinated coffee waz (10% water; obtd. from 1000 g coffee wax contg. 70% solids) was diluted with benzyl alcohol (150 g), and stirred 4 hrs. at 1450 degrees C under N2 with KOH pellets (250 g) and Na2S2O4 (10g). the resulting mixture is worked up to give is approx. 24 g serotonin creatinine sulphate of purity of 95-98%.
