Flakes, which in the dry state have a thickness of 25, pref. 75 mu and of size 100 mu, are composed of (a) a matrix of hexahydric alcohols, which are solid, non-toxic, biodegradable, water-soluble and practically free of water which is not chemically associated, in partic. mannitol or a mannitol/sorbitol mixt. with the major proportion mannitol; and (b) solid particles, partic elementary carbon, uniformly distributed in it, which have a mean size 5% of the thickness of the flakes, the particles being practically inert w.r.t. water and the hexahydric alcohols, practically insol. in water, and with a m.pt. 100 degrees C. The mixt. provides a dust-free method of incorporating finely divided pigments into plastics, thus reducing cleaning and health problems.
