The IR generating laser consists of an enclosed tube with a mixture of gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapour. There is a cathode and an anode. The is used in smelting and processing metals, quartz aluminium oxide and glassy carbon. It can also be used for infrared radar. The tube (1) is made from quartz and has specific dimensions. The discharge space is made of quartz. The cathode (2) is cylindrical and made of gold. It contains a side tube (3). The cylindrical tungsten anode (5) is fitted in another side tube (4). The emitting surface of the cathode consists of an alloy of gold, silver, copper and iridium.
