4-Phenylpiperidine derivs of formula (I) and their salts are new (where R3 is H or lower alkyl; Ph is p-phenylene opt. substd. by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2 and/or halogen; R2 is lower alkyl). (I) are antidepressants, e.g. acting as reserpine and tetrabenazine antagonists at doses of 3-30 mg/kg, noradrenaline uptake inhibitors at doses of 10-100 mg/kg, monoamine oxidase inhibitors at doses of 30-300 mg/kg, and 5-hydroxytryptamine potentiators at doses of 10-100 mg/kg (p.o). A typical cpd. is 4-(4-ethylphenyl)piperidine. In an example, this is prepd. by catalytic hydrogenation of 1- 4- (4-piperidyl)phenyl ethanol.
