Molybdenum carbide (β-Mo_2C) catalysts promoted by K_2CO_3 and Ni, supported on carbon modified SBA-15 (C-SBA-15), active carbon (AC), and mesoporous carbon CMK-3, were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation followed carbothermal reduction method. The catalytic performance of these carbon-supported catalysts for carbon monoxide (CO) hydrogenation to higher alcohols were investigated at 573K and 8 MPa, showing that CO conversion was higher with smaller β-Mo_2C particles on C-SBA-15 and AC supports. The catalytic performance of K-Ni-β-Mo_2C/C-SBA-15 indicates that addition of an appropriate amount of Ni (molar Ni/Mo=1/6) promoted the formation of Ni-Mo alloy active phase (Mo_(0.84)Ni_(0.16)) which could benefit the production of C_2+OH up to 52.6%.
