Addn. of a cell-free aq. culture medium of thiamine-requiring yeasts (e.g. Candida, Torulopsis, Trichosporon, Rhodotorula, and Cryptococcus) to the culture media contg. hydrocarbons, alcohols., or organic acids as C sources for Pichia, Saccharomyces, Zygosaccharomyces, Candida and Torulopsis increased the growth of the yeasts. In an example, Cryptococcus luteolus IFO 0411 was cultured aerobically at 25 degrees in a medium contg. 20 g glucose, 4g KH2PO4, 5g (NH4)2SO4, 0.6g MgSO4, 30 mg ZnSO4, 50 mg FeSO4, 20 mug biotin, 2 mg Ca pantothenate, 2 mug folic acid, 10 mg inositol, 200 mug p-aminobenzoic acid, 400 mug pyridoxin-HCl, 200 mug riboflavine 200, 400 mug thiamine-HCl, and water to a total vol. of 1 litre. When the yeast was fully grown, the culture medium was centrifuged. The supernatant liq. was added to a medium contg. the same constituent except paraffin 13 g/l. replacing glucose. Candida novellus ATCC 20,275 was inoculated in the medium and incubated under the same condition. The cell yield was 9.8, 12.0, and 9.1 g/l. for the yeast grown in the medium contg. 0.1, 10, and 0% Cryptococcus culture supernatant liq., respectively.
