Halogeneated derivs. (I) of adducts of norbornene and halocyclopentadiene are novel cpds. of the formula (I): (where X is halogen, i.e. F, Br and/or Cl; Y is F, cl, Br, 1-10C (ahlo)alkyl or 1-10C (halo)alkoxy, the halogen being F, Cl or Br: n and m average 0-6: n + m is approx. =2-6; if n + m is approx. =2, m is approx. =1 and n is approx. =1. Pref. X and Y are Cl, n averages 0-2, esp. 1.5, m averages 0-4, esp. ca. 1 and n + m is approx. =2-4). (I) are used as fire retardants for normally flammable polymers, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, (high impact) polystyrene, nylon, polyester polyacrylates, ABS; phenolic, epoxide, unsatd. polyester and amino resin: polyurethane and SBR elastomer et. (I) and their mixts, are added in an amt. of 2-50, pref. 5-40, esp. 10-35 wt. %, pref. in conjunction with 1-30, pref. 2-25 wt. % cpd. of a metal, e.g. Sb, Bi, Sn, Fe, Zn or As, esp. Sb2O3, Fe oxide, Zno and As2S3.
