The invention relates to a disposable contraceptive device having a first member 12 for engaging the walls of the vaginal vault and a second member 20 for engaging and closing the cervical opening. The first and second members are preferably substantially discoid, the second member preferably having a smaller area than the first. The second member is preferably of an impermeable sponge-like material which may be lubricated to aid in adhesion and closure of the cervix. The first member is generally resiliently foldable so that the overall dimension of the contraceptive device may be reduced in size for insertion into the vaginal vault. The first member is defined at least by opposed anterior and posterior portions which are for engaging the respective anterior and posterior portions of the vaginal vault. The second member is coupled or joined to the first member, preferably at the posterior portion of said first member. IMAGE
