Electrolyte-stable aqueous solutions of polyurethane ionomers having an essentially linear molecular structure and containing both hydrophilic polyalkylene oxide/polyether chains and ionic groups, and a process for the preparation of the novel compounds by reacting diisocyanates with the conventional components used for the synthesis of polyurethanes containing groups which are reactive to isocyanate groups, in the presence of components which contain nonionic hydrophilic groups and components which contain ionic groups or groups which can be converted into ionic groups.
