A method for preparing a 3-iodothiophene from a corresponding 3-bromothiophene comprising reacting with copper (I)iodide in a polar aprotic solvent and at an elevated temperature a 3-bromothiophene of formula whereinR, = H or a C_1-4 alkyl groupR₂ = H or a C_1-2 alkyl groupR₃ = H or a C_1-2 alkyl groupwith the proviso that R₂ and R₃ do not represent an alkyl group at the same time.
