A method for preparing a 3-iodothiophene from a corresponding 3-bromothiophene comprising reacting with copper (I)iodide in a polar aprotic solvent and at an elevated temperature a 3-bromothiophene of formula CHEM wherein R1 = H or a C1-4 alkyl group R2 = H or a C1-2 alkyl group R3 = H or a C1-2 alkyl group with the proviso that R2 and R3 do not represent an alkyl group at the same time.
