1,259,149. Making wave guides; coiling helices. CABLES DE LYON ALSACIENNE. 10 Nov., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968; 24 July, 1969; 25 July, 1969], No. 54983/69. Headings B3A and B3E]. A method for the semi-continuous production of wave guides formed of an insulated wire wound helically with contiguous turns is characterized in that each wave guide is formed by the repeated process of forming a wave guide section by means of a winding carriage on a cylindrical mandrel, the assembly formed by mandrel, the wound section and carriage being displaced longitudinally over a distance equal to the length of the section, and then immobilizing the section in this position whilst the mandrel is returned into its initial position to permit the forming of the next section thereon. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a mandrel 3 supported in a jaw plate 4 and a rotating tailstock 5. A winding assembly 6 comprises a carriage 7 supporting one or more reels 8 of wire 9 and wire guides 10. A carriage 11 supports one or more reels 12 of insulating or conductor tapes 13 guided by tensioning wheels 14. Pipes 15 project synthetic bonding material on the guide as it is being formed the material being heated by electric windings 16. After the guide is formed a jack 17 pushes the guide past the winding assembly 6 and the mandrel is returned by the jack to its initial position by clamping jaws 22 having an internal shoulder 24 for engaging the end of the guide while the jaws are pushed by a plate 25 attached to the piston of a jack 26 (Fig. 3). Alternatively diametrically opposed clamping shoes 27, 27SP1/SP (Fig. 5, not shown) are used. In a modified winding apparatus a cage 28 is driven by a motor 29 and comprises two reels 8, 8SP1/SP the wire from which is guided by wheels 30, 30SP1/SP and 31, 31SP1/SP one of which regulates its tension. Immediately before it is wound on the mandrel 3 the wire 9 passes through a hollow needle 32 one end of which is mounted on the shaft of a potentiometer P 1 carried by the cage 28. A second potentiometer P 2 with manual control is also mounted on the cage and the two potentiometers are connected so as to constitute a Weatstone bridge 33 so that any undesired misalignment of the needle upsets the equilibrium of the bridge and a change speed device 38 accelerates or slows the motor 29 and prevents any irregularities in the windings.
