The safety device for a tapping machine has a guide mandrel on the tool spindle with guide dies which can move radially and opposite in a housing. During the working sequence, these dies are held flexibly in engagement with the guide mandrel by a pre-tensioned spring. - A safety switch (38) is arranged in the displacement region of at least one guide die (18) and is operated by this. The dies (18, 19) are coupled with a drive which effects a complete lifting of both guide dies out of the region of the lead mandrel (17) on operating the safety switch.
