Rechargeable sodium-sulphur battery - contains sulphur in graphite felt filled electrolyte tubes inside sodium soaked metallic felt

A rechargeable sodium/sulphur battery contains the sulphur, absorbed in graphitic felt, in containers made of a ceramic electrolyte (beta Al2O3). Several of these containers are arranged inside a common tank, filled with electrochemically active sodium. This sodium is entirely absorbed in metallic felt which takesup the space in the tank which is not occupied by the containers. This prevents corrosion of the case by sulphur or polysulphides. The common sodium reservoir results in a high specific energy. The intercel resistance is reduced by the metallic felt and sodium cannot leak out in case of a breakage. The battery can be used in any position; its design is simple and it is not expensive to manufacture.
