Appts. for producing hand holes in plastic bags by a(a) folding the mouth of the bag over the cover part of the bag neck (b) clamping, cutting and welding the four superimposed layers of the foled bag mouth to produce a slot having the ends turned back through 180 degrees and mutually aligned between a pair of ancillary welds parallel to and each side of the slot. The flap defined by the slot can be turned back so that eight layers of material are available in the grip zone above the hand hole. Suitable for producing handle holes in flat or prefilled thermoplastic bags. Provides a highly shear and tear resistant handle without use of ancillary covers or inserts.
