Advancing multiple section tunnel lining - has interlocking advancing sections made of lining segments supported by structural members

The advancing tunnel lining for finishing operations after the main part has been excavated, consists of a steel shell (1) matching the final shape of the tunnel, consisting of interlocking sections (2 etc.) which can be moved forwards by actuator cylinders. Their height can be adjusted also. The front section (2) consists of steel cladding segments (6) connected by vertical structural channels. The rear parts (8) of these segments are shouldered down so as to enclose and interlock with the front parts (7) of the following section. The rearmost section (4) has a rear skirt which projects with being supported. The front parts of all the sections are supported by channels, and the rear (skirt) parts are not supported by channels, but are supported instead by the front of the following section.
