An austenitic wear resistant steel contains (by wt.) 16-23% Mn, 1.1-1.5% C, 0-4% Cr, 0.1-0.5% Ti and balance Fe. Pref. compsns. consist of 18% Mn, 1.42% C, 2.37% Cr, 0.14% Ti, 0.7% Si and 0.044% P; 19.5% Mn, 1.42% C, 0.14% Ti, 0.75% Si and 0.025% P, or 21.7% Mn, 1.5% C, 3.15% Cr, 0.13% Ti, 0.63% Si and 0.025% P, the balance in each case being Fe. The steel has 25-30% greater resistance to abrasion and combined abrasive/impact wear than Mn 12 Hadfield steel.
