Exhaust gas cooler for IC engine - has entry and secondary expansion spaces in direct contact with cooling air

Exhaust pipes (4, 5) from individual cylinders open into entry spaces in the cooler which are larger than the pipes. Perforated conical walls separate these from a large secondary space (1) which is an annular tube. A central tube (2) through the cooler has part of its circumference forming the closed ends (6) of the entry spaces. Heat is conducted from the exhaust through these closed ends into the air flowing through the central tube. The central tube also forms the inner wall of the annular space. This is cooled on its inside by the central tube and on its outside directly by the atmosphere.
