The engine has an exhaust gas cooling system with a cooler stage (2) having an exhaust gas line (10) for an exhaust gas flow (4) to pass through. The line has a wall (11) that completely or partially contacts a coolant (9) in a cooling channel (8) on a side that is not facing the exhaust gas flow. Another cooler stage has a coolant pipe and an exhaust gas line for an exhaust gas flow (5) to pass through. A section of latter exhaust gas line is surrounded by the coolant pipe. The latter exhaust gas line is placed downstream of the exhaust gas line (10).
