The engine has combustion chambers and an exhaust gas system (1) with exhaust gas cleaning units. Exhaust gas pipe systems (3, 3`, 3``) are connected with the cleaning units, and connecting units (4, 4`) are provided between the pipe systems, where the exhaust gas transversely flows via the connecting units. Control units (5, 5`) are arranged in the exhaust gas system for blocking the exhaust gas flow in the connecting units. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an internal combustion engine.
